Question: Why do people seem to like Damon so much?

HUGE(AND FIRST) RANT AHEAD.

And please don’t give me the “he’s hot” or “he’s so bad, and I like bad” or “his eyes are sooo blue” or “Damon is selfless” or “Damon should get the girl” or “Damon is the good brother” or “the brother who pretended to be evil” because I’ve heard all that before. If there is any DECENT Damon fans out there(which I know there is), who actually see a depth in this character or his relationship with Elena, and would like to explain to me why they’re appealed by that and by such a murderous, pathetic (to me) character, please do.

My personal opinion on Damon, is that he IS complex. He is. There’s no way he would act all psycho-ish and kill everyone without a reason. Yes, the obvious cause would be because Katherine broke his heart and blabla, but I think he got most of his essential damage from his father. Stefan was favorited by Giuseppe, always the one worthy of pride. Damon was tossed to the side and treated like garbage, disrespected and mentally abused, and that is hurtful and incredibly damaging, especially if it had been going on since Damon was very young. So I believe that explains his behavior, yet it does not justify it (sick of being overshadowed by his brother and thrown around by his father).

And I honestly liked him a lot in season 1-3. He was funny, he had sass, he was unapologetically evil, he gave snarky remarks without getting annoying. And I really liked Delena too. They were exciting, their chemistry was mind blowing, I was close to biting my nails off when they were on screen, because it was like Elena - to Damon - was this kind of flower. A delicate flower that he could not harm, because he felt for her and she was just a human, and he a vampire. And not harming someone when you’re a serial killer with “no redeeming qualities”, is probably very difficult, especially when you seem to get into arguments with that someone almost all the time. So it was fascinating to see him struggle, you know, to see the frustration, to see the fragile, determinate Elena and the “big bad”, insecure Damon interact; him challenging her, making her question her love for Stefan, her making him question his evilness. Yeah. They were amazing.

And then Elena turned. She became a complete different person, she was no longer fragile, she was no longer as determinate as she was before, because now she could no longer stand up to Damon, and they couldn’t challenge each other anymore, because of the sirebond. Elena was bound to do whatever Damon told her to anyway, there were no discussions, and that took the entire charm out of it. The tension was gone, even with the thousands of sex scenes they got. They were no longer the ship that I fell in love with.

Elena became less of a good person, because Damon influenced her, making her unable to “make him a better person”, when she wasn’t even a good one herself.

In the end, there just wasn’t anything good to Delena at all.

And then, when Elena turned off and then on her humanity, I expected her to go back to the way she used to be, I expected Delena to become like they were in season 1-3. Breathtakingly passionate and painful and heart-wrenching, but they didn’t. Elena - even without the sirebond - became addicted to Damon, codependent. She changed more and more, as if she needed to, to fit into Damon’s lifestyle more. But that’s where the writers did wrong. Damon and Elena were polar opposites; Elena was warm, kind, compassionate, she could never think of hurting anyone, while Damon was harsh, he never hesitated to protect the ones he loved, no matter who had to die, and he was unapologetic. And that’s why I liked them. Because they were different. They weren’t the same. They were cold and warm, morphed together. But when Elena became cold, rude, and an all around bad person, but was still constantly referred to as “the good”, and Damon became a mix of his old self and someone who constantly had to be good to deserve Elena’s love, when that wasn’t who he wanted to be… They lost me. Delena wasn’t exciting anymore, it was boring.

So please, if there is anything you still see in Delena, do tell. (sorry for long rant)
